Poll 2: Views on Nuclear Program, Deal

Iranians still broadly support the final nuclear deal between Iran and the world’s six major powers, according to a new poll by the University of Tehran’s Center for Public Opinion Research (UTCPOR) and IranPoll.com, working in conjunction with the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM). Overall approval of the agreement, however, fell from 76 percent in August 2015 to 71 percent in January 2016. One reason for this change is that some Iranians have learned more details about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and shifted their assumptions and expectations about the deal, according to Ebrahim Mohseni, a research scholar at the University of Maryland. For example, 59 percent of respondents thought that all U.S. sanctions were to be lifted eventually in August 2015 compared to 40 percent in January 2016. The following are key results from the telephone poll of 1,012 Iranians conducted from Dec. 29, 2015 to Jan. 15, 2016.
