In his final full week in office, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo outlined all that the Trump administration has done in its maximum pressure campaign against Iran. In a series of tweets, he highlighted the following accomplishments:
- The Trump administration sanctioned more than 1,500 individuals and entities
- U.S. sanctions took more than 2 million barrels of Iranian oil off the market per day
- Nearly 30 countries who were regular buyers of Iranian oil stopped importing
- Sanctions deprived Iran of $70 billion in oil revenue
- The United States seized Iranian fuel shipments bound for Venezuela and deposited more than $40 million from the sale into the Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund
- More than 100 major corporations withdrew or canceled planned investments in Iran
- More than 10 countries have banned Iran's Mahan Air from landing on their territory
- The Trump administration negotiated the release of two Americans held in Iran
- The United States helped create a 14-member international maritime coalition to protect Persian Gulf shipping
In November 2020, Pompeo argued that U.S. sanctions had crippled the Islamic Republic. “Iran’s economy faces a currency crisis, mounting public debt, and rising inflation,” he said. “The Iranian rial has depreciated to one fifth of its former value against the dollar since the start of the campaign, while Iran’s GDP has shrunk by around six percent for three consecutive years.” The following is series of tweets by Pompeo from January 2021 on the campaign.
Let’s talk Iran. The men in these photos threaten America and Israel nearly every day. pic.twitter.com/CROlrItsHk

The foreign policy blob constantly looks for a moderate inside the Iranian regime who will “normalize relations.” The reality is you have a better chance finding a unicorn.

The Trump Administration recognizes the Iranian regime is a group of radical ideologues who have been chanting “Death to America” since 1979. pic.twitter.com/NTKLMHSBI3

Ignoring terror and missiles and a clear path for the Iranian regime to get a nuclear weapon put America at risk. So we confronted them. #AmericaFirst #BadDealWorseThanNoDeal pic.twitter.com/O2xRCjm224

Thanks to our sanctions, Iran's proposed military budget is down 24% this year. We've targeted more than 1,500 individuals and entities, depriving the regime of $70 billion that would've been used to fund terrorism, ballistic missiles, and nuclear programs. #MaximumPressureWorks pic.twitter.com/opwwFNzDMg

U.S. sanctions on Iran took 2 million+ barrels of Iranian oil a day off the market; nearly 30 countries who were regular customers stopped importing Iranian oil; 100+ major corporations withdrew or canceled planned investments. #MaximumPressureWorks pic.twitter.com/90sGZFcxBf

We told the truth and took action. @StateDept designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including its Qods force, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 2019. Because it is. https://t.co/vXgdOjKjRc pic.twitter.com/lOyRB00wcq

In August 2020, the U.S. seized fuel shipments from Iran destined for Venezuela. The money from that sale - more than $40 million - went to our Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund, instead of to Maduro, the IRGC, and terror proxies. #PoeticJustice. pic.twitter.com/PP5qLjp4mE

Thousands of American sons and daughters in uniform to the Middle East? No. Punish evil, deter Iran, and secure America. Yes. pic.twitter.com/x42xTkPihf

I spoke about the importance of deterring the Islamic Republic of Iran at @HooverInst last year. Have to keep up the pressure until Tehran changes its destructive behavior. #MaximumPressureWorks https://t.co/ZzeeSErzKw pic.twitter.com/2XkXsap4Q3

How’s this for multilateral cooperation: Since 2019, 13 countries in Europe & Latin America have joined us in banning/designating Iran-backed Hizballah in its entirety as a terrorist organization. There’s no distinction between its so-called “military wing” & its “political wing” pic.twitter.com/gaAm8nlvZO

As with the CCP and the Chinese people, we have to keep making a distinction between the radical Islamist Iranian regime and the people of Iran. The Iranian people didn't elect their tormentors. They deserve so much better. https://t.co/T2bzV95K3c pic.twitter.com/logM9ox2qu

When the regime killed Iranians in the streets, protesters sent us the proof and we broadcast it for the world to see. We sanctioned their murderers, jailers, and the corrupt judges in their fake courts. pic.twitter.com/thFOFwmKmU

The @StateDept imposed the first-ever U.S. sanctions on revolutionary courts and judges for their roles in jailing prisoners of conscience, and we keep demanding release of the regime's hostages. pic.twitter.com/B5T5P0AD2y

We have stood with the Iranian people. We sanctioned their oppressors. We exposed the truth about the regime’s brutality. We deprived the regime of funds they would have used to support terrorism. Beyond a shadow of a doubt #MaximumPressureWorks pic.twitter.com/Acj9Ri2NSi

From our position of principle and strength, the Trump Administration negotiated the release of two Americans and brought them home from Iranian prisons — no pallets of cash, no ransoms, no preconditions. pic.twitter.com/AysTZyXySK
